It’s December. You know what that means. Christmas. Best Of Lists. Like all normal people I have been wading through everyone’s End Of The Year Top Ten Lists and reliving just how sucky it was music-wise. Only a few songs really stuck to my ribs. And I can’t think of many full albums that excited me. Was it me? I mean I was in a bad mood for almost all of 2009, so maybe it was me. Well anyway it certainly accounts for why I never kept up with posting. That and my supreme laziness. Anyway, 2010 looks pretty great. Hot Chip. Spoon. The Pavement reunion. So let the ball drop already and let’s get this thing started.

regarding Lil Wayne’s, Tha Carter III. It made me think about the first time I heard Talking Heads’, “Born Under Punches.” I felt dizzy, bowled over by how noisy the song was. All the dings and whistles packed into five minutes and forty-nine seconds, I still have a hard time remembering the song was built in 1980.

There are thousands of songs I love of course, but “Born Under Punches” is my favorite. It is the best. And it sets the stage for some of the songs I love today, 30 years later. What is Hot Chip’s “Over and Over” without Born Under Punches? What are The Avalanches?

Speaking of, last week I had a bout of malaise that I couldn’t shake. The only thing that made me smile was listening to “Frontier Psychiatrist.” More specifically, at 3:33 (on the original album) when the song wonders, “can you think of anything that talks? other than a person,” and a child’s voice offers, “a bird?” YEAH!

Oh and it looks like Hot Chip has a new song out today.

Feuds

If you’re reading this then you probably already know about the Miley vs. Radiohead feud. And the Arcade Fire vs. Flaming Lips feud.

Look, I don’t mean to be all, “whatevs” about anything…..but I really have to ask, “who cares about this?” And I ask that sincerely. WHO cares? Who are the carers in this? Tell me. Because I don’t get it. And I’m not being dismissive. And I’m not trying to minimize. I just want to understand.

I guess I like my feuds to be more of The Hood Internet variety.

Coachella Just Got Real Real Ya’ll

Okay so when the lineup for this year’s Coachella came out, everone was all, “lol.” But I liked it. I’m excited to go. It’s not the best lineup I’ve seen, but as my friend Lindsay is apt to say (at 6am) “It’s fucking COACHELLA!”

Ever since last year’s Coachella, I’ve been dreaming of Michael Jackson showing up. Is this the year?

Consider the following:

1. The Saturday headliner this year is The Killers. And as Fred would say, “No offense,” but no effing way.

2. This.

3. And then there’s the weird thing about Coachella airing commercials during Leno and Fallon, taking the commercial down from YouTube, and then all of a sudden Twittering it today. Note that AEG is hosting the YouTube commercial and the Jackon tour dates.

Hey bozos – let’s talk about band name memes okay?

Once it was popular to name your band after the place where you were from. Boston, Kansas, Chicago.

And then a few years ago it became fashionable to name your band after the place where you were not from. I’m From Barcelona is from Sweden. Architecture in Helsinki is from Australia. Phoenix is from France. Beirut is from the US. So is Of Montreal and Brazillian Girls. Japcakes, Manchester Orchestra and Tokyo Police Club are all misleading about where they come from.

Oh and don’t forget the time when every band had animal names. Gorilliaz, Arctic Monkeys (also not from the Arctic), Band of Horses, Panda Bear, Teddy Bears, Grizzly Bear, Minus the Bear……

Then it was deers: Deer Hunter, Deer Tick, Deer Hoof, The Dears, and our own local, Dear & The Headlights.

And then with all the wolves: Wolf Parade, Sea Wolf, Patrick Wolf, Wolf Eyes, Wolf Mother, AIDS Wolf.
This is all well tread territory. I’m not saying anything new here.

But I wanted to alert you to a new meme I noticed the other day.

Everyone who’s going to SXSW this year should get themselves invited to Rachel Ray’s party since she will be having the Hold Steady, the New York Dolls (!), Austin’s son Bob Schneider, the Airborne Toxic Event, Ra Ra Riot, Semi Precious Weapons, the Cringe, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, the Thermals and John Pringle.

Last year, she had The Ravonettes, The Stills, (sigh) Bob Schneider (seriously, is that guy ever not playing a show, he’s in Phoenix twice a month), and a band I like a lot, Scissors For Lefty.

Because when you think indie rock, you think Rachel Ray right?
